NacBowl XI:  RAIN 24, STAMPEDE 12

The Portland Rain regained the mantle of league champions today, topping the defending champ Saginaw Stampede, 24-12.  Portland jumped out to an early lead in the contest, and had to survive a furious late Stampede comeback to secure the win.

Saginaw found itself in a hole early.  Portland scored on its opening drive, a touchdown toss from Peyton Manning to Vonta Leach on a successful fourth-down gamble.  After the Rain later added a fieldgoal for a 10-0 lead, Saginaw started out in its own end, and called for a screen pass.  Portland's Jason Taylor reached out and appeared to break up Matt Schaub's pass.  But Taylor claimed he'd caught the ball, and a replay challenge confirmed it, giving Portland the ball on the interception.

Manning took advantage of the short field, finding Brian Leonard for another TD pass to extend Portland's lead.

Incredibly, Saginaw's next possession ended the same way- Schaub pass ruled incomplete, challenged, and replay awarding another interception to the Rain. The Stampede forced a turnover of its own on the ensuing possession, but the lost scoring opportunities took their toll on the Stampede.
Portland took a 17-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the top-ranked Saginaw defense stiffened and slowed Portland's attack.  But the Stampede offense struggled against a Rain defense now with the luxury of the looking only to stop the pass, and more drives ended without points.

Late in the game, after Portland had added another score late in the 3rd, Matt Schaub hit his stride, finding Mike Sims-Walker in the end zone to put Saginaw on the board.  After a successful onside kick, Saginaw drove down and scored again on a 4 yard Ronnie Brown scamper.  The two-point conversions had failed, however, so Saginaw still needed two scores.  Kicking onside again, the Stampede once again recovered, and started the march downfield again.  But the clock was Saginaw's enemy now, and time finally ran out on the Stampede comeback.  Manning came back out to take a knee, and the Portland team celebrated another title.

Congrats to the Stampede for their great season, and thanks to Ed for being such a formidable and gracious opponent, as always.

Notes:  This title game was a rematch of NacBowl XIII, also won by Portland... Manning (20-29, 249yds, 3TD) was named the game's MVP... for the game, Saginaw outgained Portland, 401 yards to 334... Portland's all-time receiving leader Torry Holt had a quiet day (1 rec for 10 yards) in likely his last game for the Rain... Saginaw's Dustin Keller led all receivers with 80 yards on 7 catches... Portland ran only 3 offensive plays in the final quarter.
